Fabric softener is key if you’re hang drying your clothes, or if you just have some itchy scratchy fabrics that you want to be able to wear comfortably. Regular fabric softener is full of bad chemicals that really shouldn’t go on your skin and might ruin your clothes, but luckily, making your own fabric softener is super easy! Not only that, but these recipes use only 2-3 ingredients, and you probably have most or all of them at home, so check out these DIY fixes!

Vinegar

Vinegar is actually an ingredient that can soften your clothes without much other work done to it! All you have to do is mix it with the essential oil, or oils, of your choice, and it’s done! Put about 1 tablespoon worth of the mixture into your wash and you’ll end up with naturally soft clothes.

Epsom Salt

Not only can Epsom salt soothe your achy muscles, but it can also soften your clothes easily! To make this DIY fabric softener, get a large jar and put in 2 cups of Epsom salt, 1/2 cup of baking soda, and 15-20 drops of essential oils. Stir it up, and use 1/4 cup of the mixture at a time!

Fear not, there’s no need to rush to the store because you can make your own dryer sheets.

You’ll need:

1 cup liquid fabric softener

2 cups water

4 sponges

Resealable container

Method:

  • Combine fabric softener with water in the resealable container.
  • Cut the sponges in half and let them soak in the water and fabric softener solution.
  • Let the sponges soak up all the liquid.

How to use:

  • When doing your next load of laundry, take one sponge from the resealable container. Squeeze any excess fabric softener back into the container.
  • Put the sponge in the dryer with your laundry just like you would with a dryer sheet.
  • When you’re finished with your laundry, put the sponge back in the resealable container for the next time.

How you’ll save:

You can reuse the sponges many times instead of buying dryer sheets. Just remember to refresh the water and fabric softener solution every 2-3 months.
