It might take quite a while before we return to business as usual, but this doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy ourselves in the meanwhile (responsibly, that is). Chef and author Signe Johansen has mastered the art of the cocktail over the years. So much so, that she’s dedicated a whole book to it.

Titled Spirited (released in October 2019), her book aims to teach you what goes on behind the bar. And god knows we could all use that drink. Her recipes (shared also on Instagram), include a Lemon Curd Float.

“I became somewhat fixated by a New York egg cream after watching Ina Garten, aka the Barefoot Contessa, aka Queen of buddderrr, make one on her show,” Johansen admits on Instagram. “Looking at a jar of lemon curd in the kitchen cupboard, I wondered if you could make an egg cream, but with lemon curd and an extra spritz of freshly squeezed lemon juice instead. GUESS WHAT, YOU TOTALLY CAN AND IT’S DELICIOUS. Adding vodka or gin for an extra kick is also pretty rad.”

Aside from publishing books, Johansen has also written for publications like The Times, Sunday Times, Daily Mail, Stella, and Marie Claire. “I grew up in Norway and we didn’t have these gendered ideas of what an ‘appropriate’ drink for a woman was,” she remarked once in an interview with Khoollect. “If you wanted a beer, you drank a beer. If you wanted a whisky, you drank a whisky.”

We admit, her Instagram page makes us thirsty (a literal thirst trap? We’ll have to get back to you on that…)

There are so many opportunities to drink a bit too much during December. From an office Christmas party to your friend’s dinner party, you probably don’t want to miss out on the good times but also don’t want to feel the rough consequences the next day. Here are the best tips that will help you handle drinking better than ever.

Always Eat Before Going Out

If you know you’ll be drinking, don’t skip dinner! Carb-loaded dinner such as pasta or pizza will help you stay sober longer.

Avoid Sweet Drinks

Cocktails, punches, and mulled wine will have you drunk before you know it and you can completely write off being productive the next day.

Drink Water

Have a glass of water with every drink so you don’t dehydrate. You can avoid hangover and headache simply by drinking enough water.

Breakfast

The morning after, eat something savory. Among the good choices are the soup, fruit, pickles, etc.
