With summer in full swing, spending time outdoors becomes a top priority. However, nothing ruins a peaceful afternoon or a cozy evening quite like an invasion of pesky bugs. Instead of resorting to chemical-laden bug repellents, why not turn to nature’s solution? In this post, we’ll explore the world of essential oils and discover how they can help repel bugs while keeping you smelling great.

Citronella Oil

Citronella is a classic bug repellent that’s widely known for its ability to ward off mosquitoes. Its fresh and citrusy aroma acts as a natural deterrent, making it an excellent choice for outdoor gatherings or camping trips. Mix a few drops of citronella oil with a carrier oil and apply it to your skin or create a homemade citronella candle for a bug-free ambiance.

Peppermint Oil

Not only does peppermint oil have a refreshing scent, but it’s also an effective bug repellent. Its strong aroma confuses and repels insects, particularly ants, spiders, and mosquitoes. Create a peppermint oil spray by combining it with water and a few drops of dish soap. Spritz it around windows, doorways, and other entry points to keep bugs out of your home.

Lavender Oil

Lavender’s floral scent keeps mosquitoes, fleas, and flies at bay. Additionally, lavender oil can soothe insect bites and provide relief from itching. Apply a diluted lavender oil blend to your skin or place lavender sachets in your closets and drawers to repel bugs while enjoying a relaxing aroma.

Lemongrass Oil

Lemongrass oil is an effective natural bug repellent with a pleasant citrusy scent. It’s especially useful against mosquitoes and ticks. Dilute lemongrass oil with carrier oil and apply it to your skin before heading outdoors. You can also infuse lemongrass oil into candles or use it in diffusers to keep bugs away from your living spaces.

Eucalyptus Oil

Eucalyptus oil is a powerful bug repellent, particularly against mosquitoes and ticks. Its strong scent masks the attractants that bugs use to locate their prey. Mix a few drops of eucalyptus oil with a carrier oil and apply it to your exposed skin or add it to a diffuser to create a bug-free zone indoors.

With the summer months quickly approaching, all sorts of bugs are coming out to annoy us. Whether you only get the occasional bug bite or feel like you are a bug magnet, using essential oils is a great natural alternative to normal bug bite creams and pills. Each oil has specific properties to combat different types of bugs and nasty side effects, so stock up for the summer ahead.

Mosquito Bites

The most common side effects from this kind of bite are swelling and itching. To combat this, use tea tree oil. This oil has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and anti-itching properties, so use it as quickly as you can after the bite to reduce swelling and irritation.

Spider Bites

Spider bites can cause itching, redness, and often be quite painful. Lavender is a good choice because it has pain reducing properties and can soothe your skin which will help with the redness.

Bee Stings

Unless you’re allergic to bee stings, you can treat the pain and stinging bite at home easily. Basil essential oil prevents a lot of strains of bacteria which can infect your sting, and a combination of lavender and tea tree can help with both the pain and the redness.
