]]>If you’ve got an artistic streak, take a little sketchpad and pencil on your next trip and use the time at the gate to sketch. It’s the perfect time to flex your creative muscle or to work on your technique by sketching your surroundings. When they call boarding you just quickly stash the pad in your bag or pocket and you’re ready to go.
If you’re a social butterfly, you can always strike up a conversation with your fellow passengers. If you’re at the same gate then you have the same destination, so you already have the perfect icebreaker. This is a great way to expand your horizons and practice approaching new people in a low-stakes setting.
Once you get on the plane, you’ll have to stay seated for a long stretch of time. That can make you stiff and uncomfortable, so use your time at the gate to stretch out in preparation. You’ll be doing your body a favor by taking this chance to stand and move around before you board.

]]>While you’ll have trouble finding airport gyms in the United States, Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) has a ROAM Fitness. It’s a full-service gym with everything from treadmills and bicycles to dumbells and weight benches. Don’t worry, ROAM Fitness centers will be available in San Fransico International Airpot (SFO) shortly.
ROAM Fitness is the only gym available in the United States, but other airports offer other fitness amenities such as yoga and airport hotels offer days passes to their gyms.
When your about to spend tons of hours sitting on an airplane, finding any time for exercise is beneficial. You can prevent aches and pains that you experience from traveling for long periods of time by exercising. An added benefit of working out before a flight is you’ll tire yourself out, which will lead to better sleep on the plane.
Try doing a HIIT (high-intensity interval training) workout because you’ll get the most out of a workout when you have a limited amount of time. If you can’t see yourself exercising before your flight, just try and stay active and walk around the airport.

]]>Depending on where you are and for how long, there is a good chance you can hop on a bus or train and explore the city you’re in for a few hours. Check before you leave to make sure, but it’s always fun to say you were somewhere new just for a few hours.
Although no one likes to do it, get out your laptop and send a few emails or tweak a paper. It’s hard to get out of the traveling mentality and put on your working hat again, but better do it while waiting at the airport than on a beautiful sunny day in your hotel room.

Exercising while you wait for your plane is a great way to keep your blood flowing after sitting in a cramped seat for so long. You can do things like pushups, jumping jacks, or butt-kicks that only require a small amount of space. Also, you can use the seats and do elevated pushups or even triceps pushups.
