Drawing miniatures is a challenging practice with an ancient tradition behind it and Chris Leach, an Irish artist based is not only meeting the challenge while creating contemporary artwork that challenges us as the audience as well.

As part of his ongoing drawing project “The World”, Leach focuses on creating miniature drawings of locations around the world such as Amsterdam (The Netherlands), Rabat (Morroco), and even Micronesia’s own Palikir.

The typical size of a drawing is around 40 millimeters width and 30 millimeters height. Leach mostly uses a pencil and a scalpel as his drawing tools, and a special tool to polish the outcome once the drawing is done. The canvas is rabbit skin gesso stretched on a tiny block of oak.

The artist chooses to depict in miniatures outdoors scenes with an emphasis on cities, which comments on the vastness of these locations in comparison to the human experience. We suddenly see the vastness of the world as a tiny insight. Since the drawings are still quite detailed it may feel like there’s no room in there for us humans. Elizabeth Hatz of EV+a Matters writes about this aspect of Leach’s work and claims that “the work makes you enter a world through the compression of your mind but the expansion of your senses.“

We’re sure you’ve all heard of washi tape, but you may not be sure what to do with it. So we put together a few ideas, but beware: washi tape is quite addictive, so read on only if you’ve extra storage space for beautiful things!

Cover-Ups

The main strength of washi tape rolls is in their aesthetics. You can pick bold designs or more tame patterns or illustrations and use them all around the house. Found a scratch on a book, piece of furniture or even your wall? Cover it up with your favorite, colorful tape.

Repairs

Washi tape is typically a roll of very thin adhesive paper so we wouldn’t recommend using it to mend plumbing or furniture, but it’s brilliant when it comes to paper product repairs. You can match a washi design to that of your favorite old notebook, and apply it to the ruffled edges and corners of the cover, and even to worn-out book and notebook spines.

Refurbish

This is washi tape’s most decorative use in our list and is aimed particularly at those who love DIY furniture. Get creative and re-design surfaces of tables and shelves with combinations of your favorite washi designs. This will make your home uniquely yours and make even the oldest ugliest pieces seem more joyful.

When designing a room, office, or even a whole new home, we very carefully select a color scheme, lighting fixtures, chandeliers, and functional furniture to allow the correct use of the spaces. Many people don’t necessarily realize that all this careful planning can be meaningless if we don’t pay attention to the color temperature of the actual bulbs selected to light the space.

which #lighttemperature are you?

During these times when many of us are setting up a home office, it’s important to make the right choice when it comes to matching up the temperature to how we work. Since LED bulbs are the most environmental, we’ll focus on the options available with LED lights.

Color temperature is measured with Kelvins (K) and runs on a scale from 1000K, representing soft, yellow candlelight, and 10000K, representing pure sunlight. The measurement relates to the light that will return from a black object in the space. The range that’s mostly available when it comes to LED lights is 2700K (“warm white”) to 5000K (“cold white” or “daylight”).

When it comes down to the actual choices, it’s mostly a matter of taste, while daylight temperature of 5,000K or higher may be a shocking brightness for some, it gives a refreshing clean tone in the eyes of others. A general tip light designers share with buyers is to use the same color temperature throughout a space to give it a cleaner, cohesive feel.
