Black Friday has been on the decline for years due to the arrival of Cyber Monday and online sales, which offer consumers equally significant discounts without having to wait in lines. Now, with the coronavirus pandemic, it seems like Black Friday is a thing of the past as retailers seek new ways to entice customers. This year, the holiday shopping season is going to look totally different from what it was before. Here is what you can expect.

An Extended Sales Season

Black Friday has always been about being first in line. Historically, people will pitch tents and camp out for days ahead of time to secure the hottest new products of the season at a steep discount. However, this year retailers are moving away from a 24-hour blitz and instead offering extended sales both in stores and online.

Earlier Deals

Traditionally, Black Friday is on the Friday following Thanksgiving Day, but due to the shift to online sales, many retailers are starting sales earlier in the hopes of taking customers from their competitors. A number of massive institutions such as Amazon, Target, Walmart, and Best Buy have been offering extensive deals since October.

Pop-Ups & Crowd Control

There has been a huge shift towards online shopping and the CDC has declared malls and shopping centers to its list of high-risk locations for corona exposure, there is sure to be a massive influx of people during the holidays. To tailor to customers and adhere to limitations on the number of people that can be in a store, many retailers are offering pop-up shops near their locations, as well as extending hours well beyond normal during the holiday season.

The U.S. is a massive country, and for every popular tourist destination, there are countless places just as beautiful and exciting, but far less crowded. The U.S. boasts 421 National Parks spread across more than 84 million miles. While people are now recommended to stay away from crowds it is the perfect opportunity to explore some of the less traveled but equally beautiful wildlife preserves.

Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky

True to its name, this protected site boasts one mammoth cave. It is actually the world’s longest known cave system, with more than 400 million miles underground that have been mapped. The park is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Reserve. Inside of the caves, you can find fossils and preserved ancient artifacts.

New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park

National parks are not exclusively nature and landscapes. Believe it or not, there is a conserved historical park dedicated entirely to jazz, located right in the middle of the French Quarter of New Orleans. Jazz is considered one of the few uniquely American art forms. The park tells the story of jazz—the history, the culture, and where we are today. The New Orleans Jazz Museum is a fascinating place to visit, and of course, there is always a variety of street performances to keep you entertained.

Sumter National Forest, South Carolina

Inducted as a national park by FDR in 1936, this park was named after Thomas Sumter, an American hero during the American Revolution. The park offers various activities including shooting ranges, four different motorbike and ATV tracks, hunting, fishing, and more. There is even an abandoned train tunnel and tracks from the Civil War era.

The Myers-Briggs test is based on the theory of the renowned Swiss psychologist Carl Jung. Jung famously described a theory that seemingly random actions become sensical if analyzed based on the way an individual thinks.

There are four basic categories, each with two options to be compared and contrasted. Based on what an individual prefers, they can be categorized into one of 16 different personality types. The system aims to help people improve themselves by allowing them to analyze the way they react to things. Here are the basic categories:

Extroverted vs. Introverted

A simple distinction to be made in determining personality is whether you prefer to be more involved with the world around you, or whether you would rather focus on yourself.

Sensing vs. Intuition

This category deals with taking in information. Sensing refers to the five senses. Logical people are often Sensing, taking in facts, and accepting what they can experience with their senses. Intuition is more akin to reading between the lines. Those with intuition take what they sense and make inferences, adding meaning that isn’t explicitly stated.

Thinking vs. Feeling

It all boils down to decision-making. Do you decide things based on logic and rules, or does it depend on the people and the circumstances?

Judging vs. Perceiving

Perception is about being aware of what is happening around you. Perceptive people remain open to options and possibilities. In contrast, judgmental people draw conclusions based on what they have perceived and prefer to make decisions.

Free Myer-Briggs personality tests are available online. So, what’s your personality type?

The market for food has changed drastically over the past year. With COVID-19, the entire food industry has been flipped on its back, and we have seen a rapid change from eat-in to delivery services.

A growing number of apps such as Wolt and GrubHub are tailoring to customers ordering from home. As a result, there has been a push towards eco-friendliness in delivery materials as well. But what we all really care about is what new foods are hot. Here are some new food trends from this year.

Biltong

No one had changed up the jerky industry until recently when biltong came onto the market. Biltong originates from South Africa and is very similar to jerky. However, while jerky is cooked in an oven, biltong is hung out to dry naturally in the air, resulting in it being much less smoky. It is now becoming known as a healthier alternative, often sought out by people on diets such as paleo.

Burger Joint Breakfast

Last year we saw fast-food giants vying for public favor as chains such as McDonald’s, Burger King, and Wendy’s rolled out Impossible Burgers and fought to offer consumers the healthiest fast food. This year, the battle is continuing on the breakfast playground. Classics like the McMuffin just don’t cut it anymore, and we are sure to see some tasty new options over the coming months.

Candy Charcuterie

Now that we all have plenty of candy from Halloween, we might as well put it to good use. Charcuterie plates are traditionally composed of cold meats, and perhaps the occasional cheese and cracker. However, a new trend is an imaginative charcuterie, composed of unconventional ingredients and displayed in delightful designs.

Reading is a great habit to pick up at any age and time. Especially as the colder months are coming up, there’s nothing quite like curling up and escaping to another world.

This month, there are a number of newly translated novels available from foreign authors. These books provide insight into the traditions of other cultures and explore subjects such as feminism, happiness, the outsider experience, and memory.

Here are three of the books that we are most excited to read:

Where The Wild Ladies Are
(Aoko Matsuda, translated by Polly Barton)

Matsuda recalls a number of traditional Japanese folktales with a modern, feminist twist.

Earthlings
(Sayaka Murata, translated by Ginny Tapley Takemori)

In this imaginative story, a child misfit comes to wonder whether she may be an alien. At her home in the city, she is discontent with her place in an unpleasant society, but she discovers an inner power as she remembers trips to the mountains in the summer and questions the mundane reality of life.

Invisible Ink
(Patrick Modiano, translated by Mark Polizzotti)

A #1 Bestseller in France, this novel is a mystery that tackles the illusions of memory. A private detective, haunted by the clues of his original investigation which proved futile, reopens the cold case thirty years later, compelled by reasons that he cannot explain.

Historical fiction is one of the most fascinating genres. It places readers in a time period from the past, often portraying significant historical events and figures through the eyes of fictional characters. Not only is historical fiction educational, but it provides compelling stories based on fact, enabling audiences to experience life in a different time. Here are four historical fiction authors that are worth giving a read.

James Michener

One of the most famed historical fiction authors of all time, Michener is known for his dedication to research. He wrote more than 40 books over the course of his career, including a number of sweeping epics based on specific locales. He would live and travel in the area he was writing about for years at a time conducting research, publishing novels reaching from the start of civilization to some significant modern event.

Ken Follett

Known by many for his thriller and spy novels, Ken Follett is also highly regarded in the world of historical fiction, covering events like the Iranian Revolution and World War II. The Century Trilogy is a saga following the fates of five interrelated families in different countries through World War I and the Russian Revolution is perhaps Follett’s most famous work of historical fiction.

Umberto Eco

Umberto Eco was a prolific Italian writer, philosopher, and commentator on political and social issues. He is undoubtedly most famous for his medieval mystery, The Name of the Rose. The story follows a friar investigating a series of murders in a 14th-century monastery.

We all need to center ourselves sometimes, but not everyone has the same method for reaching their “happy place.” Meditation is always a good place to start. First, though, you need to know what style suits you. For example, there are both guided and unguided meditations. There are so many different practices that it is important to find what best tends to your personal needs. Here is a list of different kinds of meditation.

Zen

Originally created by Buddist monks, Zen meditation focuses on breathing and being aware of your surroundings. By letting the mind go free, one becomes more alert to what is around.

Mantra

As opposed to many meditations that emphasize breathing, mantra meditation encourages users to center themselves on a phrase. The practice teaches students to refocus themselves during meditation by repeating their personal mantra.

Yoga

Yoga is popular because it brings fitness and meditation together. For many, stretching and being active is a wonderful way to relax. With the added atmosphere and guidance, yoga can also induce a meditative state. Different types of yoga also offer an array of options for practitioners.

Vipassana

This style of meditation has been used to great success in reforming prisoners around the world. A more intense experience, Vipassana courses take place over 10 days, during which students do not speak. Focused on breathing through the nose, the meditation pushes users to look impartially at the true nature of reality in an effort to improve themselves.

Sometimes life gets hectic and we just can’t keep up. However, there are simple habits that you can adopt that will help you organize yourself, prioritize your time better, and alleviate any anxieties you may have about getting stuck in a rut. It’s easy to start, and doing these things every day will keep you on top of things.

Make Lists

One of the easiest ways to stay sane is to make sure you know what you have to do. Make a to-do list every day so that you have goals to accomplish by the end of the day. Seeing all of them at once will help you prioritize better, and checking completed items off of the list will make you feel accomplished.

Do One Thing at a Time

Multitasking can stress anyone. Struggling to juggle multiple projects and deadlines can be overwhelming. The best thing that you can do is to prioritize. Figure out what is the most important or time-pressing project on your to-do list, and work on that. You do not have to complete each project before moving on to the next one, but don’t focus on two at the same time.

Be Realistic

Know what you are and are not capable of, and set reasonable goals that reflect your capabilities. Many people go crazy because they set themselves unrealistic goals. Improve your lifestyle by being realistic. Setting goals that you can accomplish each day will improve your mental health, as opposed to setting unrealistic goals that will be left uncompleted.

Maintain a Routine

Maintaining a routine does not necessarily mean doing the exact same thing every day. Set yourself blocks of time to accomplish things. For example, decide that each morning, you will take half an hour to eat breakfast and do what you want and after that, you will do an hour of work. Making a schedule for yourself will ensure that you have the time to accomplish everything that you want.

It’s avocado season, and the international obsession with these fatty fruits (yes, they are fruits) has led to culinary innovations across the world. New trends in healthy eating have made avocados a staple food because of their taste, substance, and nutritional value. Beyond just adding avocado to a salad, it can be the star of its own dish. Here are some easy, avocado-based snacks that you can make for yourself at home.

Guacamole

This hearty Mexican dip is easy to make and requires few ingredients. All you need is some onion, tomato, lime juice, and of course, avocado. Some people add garlic, cilantro, and even corn. We recommend making homemade tortilla chips to go with it.

Photo by Tessa Rampersad on Unsplash

Baked Avocado

This ideal breakfast with avocado is easy to make. After halving avocados, crack an egg into the hole in the center of each. Garnish with tomatoes and green onions (or bacon and cheese if you want to indulge), and then bake in the oven until the egg is cooked to your liking.

Avocado Chips

It doesn’t seem like it would be easy, but avocado chips are simple to make. Simply mash avocado until it has a smooth and even consistency, and season as you see fit. Then spread and flatten the mixture on a baking sheet and cook until they are crisp.

The Myers-Briggs test is based on the theory of the renowned Swiss psychologist Carl Jung. Jung famously described a theory that seemingly random actions become sensical if analyzed based on the way an individual thinks.
