What’s Yerba Mate?

This drink is native to South America and it’s a leafy shrub variety related to the holly plant. Not to be mistaken with tea, it’s brewed like the beverage, and then consumed from a yerba mate straw with a filter called a bombilla. Yerba mate is somewhat earthy and bitter and the flavor takes some time to get used to.

Caffeine Content

The caffeine content of yerba mate falls between coffee and tea— an 8-ounce serving has 85 mg of caffeine and the same size serving of coffee contains about 130 mg of caffeine and green tea has around 50 mg. Unlike tea and coffee, yerba mate gives you long-lasting energy and you won’t feel jittery after drinking it.
