]]>Speaking with media on Thursday, Dolphins’ head coach Brian Flores gave a vote of confidence to Tagovailoa and said that the 22-year-old QB will make a significant step forward next season.
“I’m excited about the future with him,” said Flores. “He’s a young player, talented player, bounced back from the hip. I think this is a big offseason for him. That Year 1 to Year 2 jump will be important like it is for all rookies.”
Tagovailoa, who was Dolphins’ No.5 pick in 2020, had an uneven first season as a pro and found himself benched several times in favor of veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick. He completed 64.1 percent of his passes while throwing for just 1,814 yards and 11 touchdowns in 10 games. He also had five picks.
Despite this, the Dolphins reportedly believe that Tua Tagovailoa can be their franchise quarterback and are willing to be patient with his development. They also hope that the arrival of a new offensive coordinator and Tagovailoa being fully healthy after undergoing hip surgery last year will also work in their favor.
Still, a lot can happen in the future. Miami currently owns a third overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft via Houston Texans and could be tempted to get another QB if someone they like falls into their lap.

]]>Tagovailoa, who was selected No.5 in the 2020 NFL Draft, made his pro debut against the Jets. He entered the contest just before the two-minute warning, attempting two passes and completing both before the clock run out.
This evidently was all that Dolphins needed to see, as Tagovailoa will take the command of the offense moving forward. Considering Miami has a bye week, the 22-year-old Alabama product will make his first start in Week 8 against LA Rams.
It comes as a surprise that Dolphins decided to make a switch, especially considering that veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick played well so far in the season. With Fitzpatrick as signal-caller, Dolphins are 3-3 this season, sitting one game behind the top spot in AFC East.
But Miami obviously felt that Tua Tagovailoa had enough time to prepare in these past six weeks and that he can perform on a high level. Also, the Dolphins do not have the imperative of making the playoffs this season, which leaves Tagovailoa with a bigger margin for errors.
