You’re hearing it everywhere these days: isolation is a perfect excuse to catch up on everything you need to do or have always wanted to do. But what if that only puts more pressure on you on top of everything that’s going on in the world?

Despite what everyone’s saying, you’re not obligated to do anything during this pandemic if you don’t want to. You’re allowed to be stressed and to need time to rest and recharge; after all, it’s not like this is a vacation. The last thing you want is to feel bad because you’re less productive than everyone else: that’s not helping you or anyone.

And consider this: how do you even know about other people’s quarantine life? From social media? You can bet the image they’re sharing is not completely realistic, if not totally false.

Yes, we now have a sudden chance to sit at home and learn a new skill, cook, learn a language, and organize every corner of the house. But you know what? The only thing you need to do is the thing you want to do! Even if it means staying in bed by noon and spending most of your days practicing hobbies or streaming your favorite TV show.

In situations like this pandemic, keeping yourself sane and not letting yourself get caught in a vicious cycle of bad news is crucial. We get that you need to stay informed, but limit the daily time for consuming news and make sure to spend as much time as you can doing something you enjoy.

If reading is among your favorite home activities, here are three recommendations that will make you feel better.

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) by Mindy Kaling

We always enjoy Kaling’s humor and writing, and her debut book is a perfect place to start if you haven’t read anything she wrote yet.

Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

Despite what the title of this book is saying, Eleanor Oliphant is not fine. She just thinks she is, but she will learn many things about herself along the way. This book gets pretty sad in some parts, but the overall feeling we had after reading it is that it’s a lovely and heartwarming story.

The Most of Nora Ephron by Nora Ephron

Whether you’re in a mood for a book or a romantic movie, Nora Ephron got you covered. Reading this book will make you feel like she’s your best friend.

View this post on Instagram

‘Don't you love New York in the fall? It makes me want to buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address.’ — Nora & Delia Ephron (screenplay, You’ve Got Mail). . . . Has a line ever captured the back-to-school spirit of September so graphically, so iconically, as this? I’ve lost count of the number of journalistic pieces I’ve read in the last couple of weeks that have mentioned newly sharpened pencils, but this is the original and best. . Inspired by You’ve Got Mail’s passion for autumn (and for independent booksellers, by the way), I bought this copy of The Most of Nora Ephron recently. It contains a collection of her best-known, best-loved writing, including moments from When Harry Met Sally … . For me, Ephron’s romantic comedies harked back to the films of an earlier, golden Hollywood age. They just don’t make ‘em like that any more. But I’ve never read any of her prose and I’m looking forward to it. . And, of course, now I’m curious to read something more by Delia Ephron, too — Sister Mother Husband Dog (etc), perhaps? . . . . . #NoraEphron #TheMostOfNoraEphron #DeliaEphron #YouveGotMail #womenwriting #screenwriting #moviemonday #hello_autumn #fallingintoautumn #thejoyofseptember #relishingreading #newyorkstateofmind #momentsofmine #booksmakemehappy #makingthemostofmonday #bookstagram

Are you used to this new reality already? It’s not easy to adjust to not being able to go anywhere, but that’s what life looks like now that social distancing is the norm. We’re all hoping things will go back to normal soon, but until they do, here’s how you can bring the best aspects of travel to your daily life.

Simplify Your Mornings

When you’re traveling, your mornings are optimized to get you going through the door as quickly as possible. Reduce the beauty and wardrobe routine as much as you can – imagine you’re packing for a trip and have a limited luggage room. Prepare several outfits you’ll wear on repeat and remove everything you’re not using on a daily basis from your bathroom cabinet.

Do Nothing

You don’t have to be productive every second of every day. Instead of doing busy work just so you’d do something, embrace not doing anything and take a nap, paint, or find another way to rest and relax.

Cook International Specialties

Remember your past trips by cooking food from different cuisines. Then put on some music from that country and enjoy a theme night!

It seems like it happened overnight. Suddenly, millions of people got basically stuck at home in order to prevent the spreading the coronavirus pandemic. We don’t know how long it’ll be before we’ll be able to start going out again, but until we do, here are some things you can do so you don’t lose yourself in endless TV show streamings and hours of sitting on the couch.

Take Care of Yourself

Now is the time to do all the skincare rituals and all use up all the hair masks that you hoarded over the past months. You can try out different makeup looks if you’re into that. Taking care of yourself is important in order to feel good and have more structure in your life, even if you’re not going anywhere.

Video Chat

Don’t forget to check how your family and friends are doing by video chatting them whenever you have the chance. We have the technology to stay in touch so use it so you feel less lonely and anxious.

Move Around

Even though you’re inside, there are many ways to move your body. You can clean your home, do home workouts, or just dance to your favorite songs; as long as you’re having fun and feeling productive, everything goes.

It’s important to do some planning for your staycation. Don’t get caught out by your old routines and end up just increasing your screen time. A little thought can turn your staycation into an ideal break.

Spoil Yourself

If you were staying in a fancy hotel, you would expect breakfast with fresh pastries and great coffee. So why not get these things in advance for your time off? You will have the added advantage of not having to get out of bed early, in case you miss breakfast.

Decorate Your Space

Before your staycation begins, make sure your home is tidy as you don’t want to spend the time cleaning. Invest in some fresh flowers to brighten the space and make you feel special.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B6Ycx1Pinla/

Bath Time

Treat yourself to a spa day at home. You can get a beautician to come round and give you a massage and manicure. You can then spend the afternoon relaxing with a glass of champagne in the bath. On a budget? Pick up a couple of face masks and new nail polish from the Dollorama and you’re good to go.

Dine Out

Set yourself a budget and treat yourself to a fancy restaurant locally that you may not have been to before. If you were on vacation, you may splash out, so apply the same logic to your staycation. Go out, feast and enjoy.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B6bGnR2gojL/

Keep your Staycation a Secret

If your family, friends or work colleagues know that your planning to be at home, they may feel more inclined to get in touch and ask for favors. Your time is precious so spend some time away from your screens and turn off your phone. This is your time.
