Winter is here and it is having a major effect on your hair and scalp. Your hair is drier and more brittle and your scalp is itchy and flaky. So what can you do to make sure this doesn’t happen? First, you need to take extra care of your hair in the winter, as you will be drying it more often than you did in the summer. Plus with the lack of moisture in the air, you will need more moisturizing products to keep it soft and supple! Here are some winter hair care tips for you to try.

Hair Oil for Your Scalp

Invest in a good hot oil massage with nourishing hair oils like coconut and olive oils. The oils will penetrate the hair shaft and keep the hair moisturized and massaging the scalp will improve blood circulation and stimulate hair growth.

Avoid Heat Styling Tools

As the weather cools down you will have to start drying your hair with a blow dryer more often, which does dry out the follicles. Try to avoid the straightening and curling tongs as much as you can or make sure to use protective sprays. You can also braid your wet hair in the evening and it will be dry with texture in the morning.

Cover Your Hair

In order to avoid the cold and wet damaging your hair more, start covering your hair with a scarf or hat when you are outside. Silk or satin are your best options to stop static and flyaways.

Regular Trims

The cold and dry air in the winter causes more split ends and breakage so make time to have regular trims to keep your ends fresh and even.

What are split ends? How can you avoid them? Here’s all you need to know about the pesky hair problem and how to deal with it.

How to Avoid Split Ends

Split ends are caused by your hair dehydrating. When the hair loses moisture, the hair thins and it becomes brittle and dry. Eventually, this causes the ends to split apart.

Hair is more prone to drying in extreme weather conditions or when it is overexposed to chemicals. To reduce the chance of split ends, avoid using harsh chemicals on your hair and instead opt for gentler, more natural products.

How to Treat Split Ends

Even if you avoid chemicals and cold weather altogether, that doesn’t mean you are free from split ends. If you have fine hair, they can still occur simply because of the way you brush your hair.

If you are prone to split ends, you can treat your hair with a product that nourishes your hair and protects brands from splitting further. UV protection spray is also a great way to keep your hair from dehydrating as quickly in extreme heat.

What to Do About Split Ends

Unfortunately, once your hair has split, it cannot be resealed. The best thing to do when you find a split end is to trim the end before your hair splits any further. Getting your hair trimmed regularly will help you avoid hair loss as a result of split ends.

Growing long and healthy hair is not easy, especially if you’re maintaining some of the bad habits that can cause split ends. Check out the list of things you should incorporate in your beauty routine in order to prevent split ends.

Get a Cut with Hot Scissors

Stylists swear that getting a haircut with hot scissors is the solution to split ends and a great way to keep your hair healthy. Hot scissors actually seal the end of the hair, making it less prone to damage and dryness.

Avoid Hot Showers

It is a well-known fact that hot water is very damaging to the hair and makes it more prone to split ends. That’s why it’s best to use lukewarm water when rinsing your hair if you want to avoid splits.

Don’t Over-Shampoo

Washing your hair too often and using too much shampoo will most certainly damage your hair and lead to splits. Over-shampooing will dry out your hair and make it more vulnerable to damage, so make sure not to use more than 2 full teaspoons of shampoo.

Use a Microfiber Towel

Unlike cotton towels, microfiber towels prevent frizz and leave your hair damp because they’re better at absorbing moisture. Also, remember to be gentle with your hair when it’s wet and use a wide-tooth comb if you really must detangle it.
