Desk jobs are more and more common each year. And if you have a desk job, you might not even notice how many hours in a row you end up sitting in the same position. The truth is, this isn’t that good for your body or health. Let’s take a closer look.

Understanding the Risks of Prolonged Sitting

Sitting for extended periods is linked to numerous health issues like obesity, cardiovascular disease, and a decrease in metabolic rate. Prolonged sitting can also lead to musculoskeletal disorders, particularly in the lower back and neck.

The Science Behind Standing Up

Standing up engages your muscles and stimulates blood flow, counteracting the effects of sitting. Studies suggest that standing for two hours spread throughout the workday can significantly reduce the risks associated with prolonged sitting.

Recommended Standing Intervals

Experts recommend standing up every 30 minutes. This doesn’t mean you need to stand for long periods. Even a minute or two can be beneficial. Integrating standing into your routine can be as simple as standing while taking a phone call or walking to a colleague’s desk instead of sending an email.

Besides standing, you can add small movements like stretching or even simple leg lifts. The goal is to get your body moving.
