On January 5, 2025, the Detroit Lions delivered a commanding performance against the Minnesota Vikings, securing a 31-9 victory at Ford Field. This win not only clinched their second consecutive NFC North title but also earned them the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs, granting home-field advantage throughout the postseason.

Game Highlights

Running back Jahmyr Gibbs was the standout player of the night, amassing 170 yards from scrimmage and scoring four touchdowns—three in the second half. This remarkable feat places him alongside Barry Sanders as the only running backs in franchise history to score four touchdowns in a single game. Additionally, Gibbs set a new franchise record for the most combined rushing and receiving touchdowns in a single season, according to Reuters.

Quarterback Jared Goff completed 27 of 33 passes for 231 yards, throwing one touchdown and two interceptions. Despite the turnovers, Goff effectively managed the game, leading sustained drives that kept the Vikings’ defense on the field.

The Lions’ defense was formidable, limiting the Vikings to just three field goals and preventing any touchdowns. Their relentless pressure resulted in multiple sacks and disrupted Minnesota’s offensive rhythm throughout the game, AP News reported.

The Vikings, who entered the game on a nine-game winning streak, were unable to find their footing. Quarterback Sam Darnold faced constant pressure, leading to hurried throws and missed opportunities. The loss relegates Minnesota to a wild-card spot as the No. 5 seed in the playoffs, where they are set to face the Los Angeles Rams.

Lions Secure No. 1 Seed

This victory marks the first time in franchise history that the Lions have secured the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs. With a 15-2 record, Detroit has demonstrated consistency and resilience throughout the season. The achievement also underscores the significant progress made under the current coaching staff and front office, signaling a new era of success for the long-struggling franchise.

With the top seed secured, the Lions will enjoy a first-round bye, allowing players to rest and recover. The team will host the lowest remaining seed in the divisional round, with hopes of advancing to their first Super Bowl appearance. The victory has ignited excitement among Detroit fans, who have long awaited postseason success.

“We’re obviously having a better season this year, and I think everybody is still counting us out a little bit, so being able to shut them up a little bit feels good,” Jahmyr Gibbs told ESPN.

The Vikings, now the No. 5 seed, must regroup quickly as they prepare to face the NFC West champion Los Angeles Rams in the wildcard round. Despite the setback, Minnesota’s 14-3 record reflects a strong season, and the team remains a formidable contender in the playoffs.

Despite being the only winless team in the NFL this season, New York Jets are not ready to give up on their head coach Adam Gase and quarterback Sam Darnold.

Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Jets’ general manager Joe Douglas defended Gase and said that it’s not only his fault that the team is sitting at 0-8.

“This is not all on Adam,” said Douglas. “I have to do a better job of surrounding him with better players and better weapons.”

According to Douglas, the Jets see Gase as part of their future despite the fans calling for his job.

“The hope is that we can fix these problems together and be here together for a while,” he added.

Being the team with the worse record in NFL, the Jets are currently in pole position to get a top overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. This would give them a chance to select Clemson’s signal-caller Trevor Lawrence, who is considered to be one of the most talented QBs to come out of college in the past decade.

But it appears that Douglas doesn’t believe quarterback is the position of need for the organization despite Darnold’s sub-par performances since he was selected No.3 in 2018.

“I’m very excited about Sam,” Douglas explained. “I have no problem saying that he is our best quarterback and our quarterback for the future.”

It is understandable that Douglas doesn’t want to cause further disarray to an already dishearted Jets’ team. But even if he believes all of the things he said, it should take long before he changes his mind if Gase and Darnold continue to underperform.
