Ottawa Senators announced on Tuesday that they have reached a contract agreement with center Chris Tierney. According to the team, Tierney inked a two-year deal worth $7 million.

Tierney, who finished the 2019/20 with 11 goals and 26 assists for 37 points, was a restricted free agent and heading toward an arbitration hearing next month.

In a statement issued after the deal was made official, Senators’ general manager Pierre Dorion said that he’s pleased with keeping Tierney in Ottawa and that the team views as an important piece of their lineup.

“He’s a reliable veteran who has very good hockey sense and who is consistently among our best centers in faceoff success rate,” said Dorion.

Chris Tierney started his career with San Jose Sharks, where he played 284 games in four seasons and accumulated 104 regular-season points. Sharks traded him to the Senators in 2018 as part of the deal that landed them All-Star defenseman Erik Karlsson.

Tierney has increased his average production since coming to Ottawa, as he managed to score 20 goals, and dish 65 assists in 152 appearances on ice.

“Without a doubt, Matt Murray will be our No. 1 goalie this year,” Senators general manager Pierre Dorion exclaimed in an interview. “I’ve spoken publicly that [goalie] Anders Nilsson has had, still has symptoms from a concussion suffered in December, which is unfortunate.

He can’t do stressful physical activities. So at this point in time, you know we’ve been working on this trade with [Penguins GM] Jim Rutherford, who was great to deal with, and we were able to pull the trigger this morning.”

The 26-year-old Murray achieved a record of  20-11-5 with a 2.87 goals-against average during the last season, with a 2.87 goals-against average, an .899 save percentage, and one shutout.

With the signing of Murray in the bag, the Senators have confirmed that 39-year-old goalie Craig Anderson would not be offered a new contract for next season. While Anderson won back to back Stanley Cup titles in 2016 and 2017, he shared his goaltending duties with Tristan Jarry this past season. With Anderson approaching retirement, the Senators were in need of a fresh talent such as Murray.
