In a move that has sent shockwaves through the NBA, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Dallas Mavericks have agreed to a monumental trade, exchanging franchise cornerstones Luka Dončić and Anthony Davis. The deal, which also involves the Utah Jazz, represents one of the most significant player swaps in recent league history.

Lakers Trade Davis for Dončić

According to CBS Sports, the Los Angeles Lakers have acquired Luka Dončić, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris from the Dallas Mavericks. In exchange, the Mavericks receive Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round draft pick. The Utah Jazz also play a role in the deal, securing Jalen Hood-Schifino along with two second-round picks in the 2025 NBA Draft.

Luka Dončić, a five-time All-NBA selection and former Rookie of the Year, has been the face of the Mavericks since his debut. His move to Los Angeles pairs him with LeBron James, creating a formidable duo aimed at immediate championship contention. Dončić’s versatility and playmaking abilities are expected to complement James’s leadership as the Lakers strategize for both present success and a future beyond James’s tenure.

Anthony Davis, a pivotal figure in the Lakers’ 2020 championship run, brings his defensive prowess and scoring ability to Dallas. Mavericks General Manager Nico Harrison emphasized the importance of bolstering the team’s defense, stating, “I believe that defense wins championships. I believe that getting an All-Defensive center and an All-NBA player with a defensive mindset gives us a better chance. We’re built to win now and in the future,” as reported by ESPN.

Davis is reportedly waiving his trade kicker to facilitate the deal, allowing the Mavericks to move below the luxury tax threshold, as noted by Yahoo! Sports.

The inclusion of Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris provides the Lakers with additional depth. Kleber, currently sidelined due to injury, has been a reliable contributor for Dallas, while Morris offers veteran experience. The Mavericks acquire promising young guard Max Christie and a future first-round pick, assets that could play significant roles in their long-term planning.

The Utah Jazz’s participation in the trade brings them Jalen Hood-Schifino and two second-round picks, assets that align with their rebuilding efforts.

Mixed Reactions

The trade has elicited a wide range of reactions across the NBA community. Social media platforms have been abuzz with discussions, with many fans expressing surprise at the magnitude of the deal. The pairing of Dončić with James has been a focal point, with analysts speculating on the potential dynamics of this new partnership.

As the league awaits official confirmation and the completion of physical examinations, the basketball world is keenly anticipating the on-court debut of these revamped rosters. The Lakers, currently positioned fifth in the Western Conference, aim to leverage Dončić’s talents to solidify their playoff standing. Meanwhile, the Mavericks are optimistic that Davis’s arrival will enhance their defensive capabilities and overall competitiveness.

This trade marks a significant shift in the NBA landscape, with both franchises making bold moves to reshape their futures. Fans and analysts alike will be closely monitoring how these changes influence the trajectory of the season and the broader competitive balance of the league.

In a thrilling showdown at the Chase Center in San Francisco, CA on Saturday night, the Los Angeles Lakers emerged victorious over the Golden State Warriors with a 118-108 win. Behind standout performances from Anthony Davis and LeBron James, the Lakers secured their third consecutive victory, continuing their climb up the Western Conference standings.

Davis was the anchor for the Lakers, delivering an impressive double-double with 36 points and 13 rebounds, as reported by ESPN. His dominance in the paint on both ends of the court proved crucial. James, despite being listed as questionable due to foot injury management, contributed 25 points and a game-high 12 assists, showcasing his veteran leadership and court vision.

Close Game

The game remained neck-and-neck through the first three quarters, with the Lakers holding a slim 89-87 lead heading into the fourth. However, Los Angeles turned up the intensity in the final period, outscoring Golden State 29-21. Their late-game composure and defensive focus were key to closing out the game.

On the Warriors’ side, Andrew Wiggins led the scoring effort with 20 points, while Stephen Curry struggled offensively, finishing with just 13 points and going scoreless in the second half, as noted by Reuters. Warriors head coach Steve Kerr acknowledged the team’s difficulties post-game, noting, “We got 46 threes up — 17 more than [the Lakers] did,” Kerr said. “We know we have to be a three point shooting team to win. We don’t really get to the line a whole lot or get a lot of easy buckets…second half we had some turnovers, some costly turnovers, just couldn’t get anything going offensively,” as reported by Sports Illustrated.

Second Victory This Season

This win marks the Lakers’ second victory over the Warriors this season and adds to their growing momentum during a pivotal stretch of the season. The Warriors, on the other hand, will need to regroup after this loss, as they remain in a tightly contested playoff race. For Curry and his squad, improving their consistency, particularly in closing out games, will be crucial moving forward.

With this victory, the Lakers continue their road trip, hoping to sustain their winning streak and solidify their playoff position. Meanwhile, the Warriors will look to bounce back in their upcoming matchups to regain their footing.

The season series between these two rivals highlights the intensity of the Western Conference competition, and Saturday’s game was yet another chapter in their storied rivalry.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have traded forward Kevin Porter Jr., their first-round pick in 2019, to Houston Rockets, according to multiple reports.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski wrote on Twitter that the Cavs will receive a “future protected second-round pick” as part of the deal. Reportedly, the pick is protected to No.55, which makes it unlikely to convey.

In order to finalize the move, Houston waived Chris Clemons. Clemons, who is currently out with an ACL injury, played 33 games for the Rockets last season and averaged 4.9 points.

The news doesn’t come as a surprise, considering that Cleveland made the decision to part ways with Kevin Porter earlier this week. The USC product clashed with one Cavs’ official after re-joining the team following a lengthy absence, which, coupled with his previous problematic behavior, prompted the organization to move on.

The Rockets are hoping to have a better chance of helping Porter overcome off-the-field issues and have a successful NBA career. The 20-year-old is expected to work closely with assistant John Lucas, who has a history of helping troubled players bounce back and become a factor in the league.

Porter averaged 10.0 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.2 assists last season with the Cavs. He hasn’t played a single game in 2020/21.

Brooklyn Nets will be without superstar Kevin Durant for the next four games according to multiple reports from around the league.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that Durant had close contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19 and will have to spend at least seven days in quarantine. The 32-year-old player can get back on the court on January 12th against the Denver Nuggets but needs to continue to produce negative tests on a daily basis.

Durant already had COVID-19 back in May but is subject to NBA’s health and safety protocols regardless.

The news is a tough blow for the Nets as they are looking to get back to their winning ways after recent struggles. Brooklyn opened the season with two dominant wins but then went on to lose four out of their last five games.

The Nets will welcome the Utah Jazz on Tuesday and red-hot Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday before heading to Memphis on Friday. They are also set to play Oklahoma City Thunder before Durant is eligible to return.

Durant, who missed the entire last season due to an Achilles injury, has been the Nets’ best player in 2020/21. In the six games he played so far, he is averaging 28.2 points while also adding 7.0 rebounds, 4.8 assists, and 1.2 steals per game.

After missing the better part of 2019/20 with an injury, Golden State Warriors’ superstar Steph Curry struggled to find his rhythm early in the season. But this wasn’t the case against the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday night, as Curry exploded with a career-high 62 points to give his team a 137-122 win.

Curry started the game red-hot, shooting 7 out of 11 and delivering 21 points in the first quarter alone

The two-time NBA MVP added 10 more to close the first half and then torched Portland with 31 additional points in the second half.

Curry finished the game with 62 points, five rebounds, and four assists. He shot 18-for-31 from the field and 8-for-16  from the three-point arc while making 18 out of his 19 free throw attempts.

“It was just a brilliant performance,” said Warriors head coach Steve Kerr after the game. “It’s just a privilege to coach him. It really is. … What a performance tonight.”

Several other Warriors’ players stepped up to help Curry, with Andrew Wiggins scoring 21 and Kelly Oubre Jr. adding 17. Rookie James Wiseman also had an encouraging performance, recording his first double-double as a pro with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum led the way for Trail Blazers, scoring 32 points and 28 points, respectively.

The Minnesota Timberwolves won’t be able to count on All-Star center Karl-Anthony Towns this week—and maybe even longer. The Timberwolves announced on Sunday that Towns is dealing with a wrist injury and is currently out indefinitely.

Towns got hurt in the 116-111 win over the Utah Jazz on Saturday after taking a hard fall in the fourth quarter. The 25-year-old center managed to return and finish the game but said after the game that his wrist, one he fractured last year, was feeling sore.

According to Minnesota’s official announcement, Towns won’t need surgery to address the injury and will be evaluated weekly.

Speaking about Towns’ injury on Sunday, Timberwolves’ head coach Ryan Saunders told reporters that there is no timetable on the return of his star player. “That’s the name of the game this year is be adaptable in situations, and we’re not going to hang our heads,” Saunders added.

Timberwolves had a promising start of the 2020/21 NBA season, winning against Detroit Pistons and Utah in their first two games. They couldn’t do much without Karl-Anthony Towns against LA Lakers on Sunday, however, suffering a blowout 127-91 loss.

Towns averaged 19.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 1.0 steals, and 3.0 blocks per game in the previous two games.

The Reigning NBA champs Los Angeles Lakers continued their busy offseason on Sunday locking under long-term contract another important roster piece. After extending superstars LeBron James and Anthony Davis’ contracts last month, the team announced that they also agreed to a new deal with forward Kyle Kuzma.

According to ESPN, Kuzma inked a three-year, $40 million deal that ties him for the franchise through the 2023/24 NBA season. The extension comes with a player option that will allow him to hit the free agency a year earlier.

Kuzma is coming off a down year in which he averaged career-lows across the board, contributing with 12.8 points and 4.5 rebounds in the regular season. He had even worse production in the playoffs, managing just 10.0 points per contest.

Kuzma found himself in the center of trade rumors because of these struggles during the offseason, but it turns out that the franchise still believes he can be a valuable contributor for them in years to come.

“Kyle has shown tremendous growth over the last three years and played a crucial role on last season’s championship team,” said Lakers’ general manager Rob Pelinka in a statement. “Kyle has been a terrific member of the Lakers community, and we are all very excited about his continued future with us.”

The LA Lakers took Kyle Kuzma with the No. 27 pick in 2017, and it’s safe to say that he outperformed his draft position so far. He made an NBA All-Rookie First Team in his first season in the league and has averaged 16.0 points and 5.5 rebounds in 208 career games in NBA.

After playing basketball in China for a year, veteran guard Jeremy Lin is on track to return to the NBA. And he might just do it with the team that gave him his first shot in the league.

According to multiple reports, Lin will sign a deal with Exhibit 10 deal with Golden State Warriors in the coming days. The 32-year-old Lin, however, isn’t expected to be part of the team’s 15-men roster and should play for their G League affiliate Santa Cruz Warriors.

Playing in G League gives Lin a better chance of making an NBA roster. He can either get signed by another team or promoted to NBA by Warriors on a two-way contract.

Jeremy Lin spent his rookie season with the Warriors, playing 29 games with the organization during the 2010/11 NBA season. He averaged less than 10 minutes on the floor, contributing 2.6 points per game.

After this struggling outing in Golden State, Lin joined New York Knicks during the 2011/12 campaign. In New York, he had a productive 12-game stretch that later became known as “Linsanity” and established him as a quality starter in the league.

Lin later played with Houston Rockets, LA Lakers, Charlotte Hornets, and Atlanta Hawks, among other teams. His last NBA stint was an NBA Title run with Toronto Raptors in 2019.

Lin spent the 2019/20 season with Beijing Ducks, playing in 39 games and averaging 22.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game. He helped the Ducks to playoffs semis, where they lost to defending champions Guangdong Southern Tigers.

One of the storylines of this NBA offseason is whether or not Giannis Antetokounmpo will sign an extension with the Milwaukee Bucks. If the reigning NBA MVP doesn’t ink a deal in the next two weeks, he’ll be a free agent next year and can walk away from the Bucks for nothing.

As expected, questions about an extension are the focus of every media appearance of the 26-year-old Antetokounmpo, but for now, he isn’t keen on answering them.

During a chat with reporters on Wednesday, Antetokounmpo told the media that he’s “not focused” on the extension at the moment and instead is trying to focus on himself.

“I’m not focused on that,” said Antetokounmpo. “I’m just trying to focus on myself — how I can get better, how I can help my teammates get better, how can we be ready Saturday to play our first preseason game?”

Antetokounmpo added that he prefers to leave contract discussions to his agent Alex Saratsis and Milwaukee’s brass led by general manager Jon Horst.

Time is running out on Giannis Antetokounmpo’s decision, as he and Bucks have until December 21st to agree to a new deal.

If Antetokounmpo remains in Milwaukee, he will be eligible for a five-year, $228 million supermax extension. In case he opts to go somewhere else in 2021, the maximum that the new team can offer him is four years and around $160 million.

At the beginning of the offseason, the word around the league was that the Bucks are confident they’ll manage to keep Antetokounmpo after orchestrating the trades for veteran guard Jrue Holiday and Serbian sharpshooter Bogdan Bogdanovic. However, the sign-and-trade for Bogdanovic ended up falling apart and now Milwaukee reportedly is not so sure what will the “Greek Freak’s” decision be.
