In a strategic move to bolster their lineup following the departure of star outfielder Juan Soto, the New York Yankees have acquired former National League MVP Cody Bellinger from the Chicago Cubs. The trade, finalized on December 17, 2024, sends right-handed pitcher Cody Poteet to Chicago, with the Cubs contributing $5 million to offset Bellinger’s remaining contract.

Who is Cody Bellinger?

Bellinger, 29, revitalized his career with the Cubs over the past two seasons. In 2023, he earned the National League Comeback Player of the Year award, posting a .307 batting average with 26 home runs and 97 RBIs. His 2024 performance remained solid, hitting .266 with 18 home runs and 78 RBIs.

The Yankees’ acquisition of Bellinger addresses the offensive void left by Soto’s departure to the New York Mets. Bellinger’s versatility allows him to play both center field and first base, providing flexibility for the Yankees’ defensive alignment. His left-handed bat adds balance to the lineup, complementing the team’s existing power hitters.

According to KTLA, Bellinger is owed $27.5 million in 2025, with a player option for 2026. The Cubs’ $5 million contribution will help the Yankees manage this commitment. In exchange, the Cubs receive Cody Poteet, a 30-year-old right-hander who demonstrated potential during his tenure with the Yankees, posting a 2.22 ERA over five appearances in 2024.

What Does the Trade Mean?

This trade is part of a broader strategy by the Yankees to reconstruct their roster after missing out on retaining Soto. Earlier in the offseason, they signed left-handed pitcher Max Fried to an eight-year, $218 million deal, enhancing their starting rotation. Additionally, they acquired closer Devin Williams from the Milwaukee Brewers, strengthening the bullpen.

Bellinger’s addition is expected to provide a significant boost to the Yankees’ offense. His power-hitting capabilities and defensive versatility make him a valuable asset as the team aims to remain competitive in the American League East. The Yankees are also exploring further options to address needs at second base and additional offensive depth.

Regarding the offensive overhaul, the General Manager of the Yankees Brian Cashman told the New York Post, “The job isn’t finished here. We’ve got to move forward and figure out a way to put the best team on paper that we can. Now’s the time to strike in the wintertime with the inventory we have via trades or free agency. Eventually that inventory is going to get a lot smaller. We want to take advantage of that opportunity.”

For the Cubs, trading Bellinger opens financial flexibility for future moves. With the recent acquisition of outfielder Kyle Tucker, Bellinger became expendable, allowing the Cubs to focus on other areas of their roster. Poteet’s addition provides depth to their pitching staff, offering a reliable arm for the upcoming season.

Notably, this trade continues a family legacy, as Bellinger’s father, Clay Bellinger, played for the Yankees from 1999 to 2001, as reported by ESPN. Cody and Clay now join the ranks of father-son duos who have donned the Yankees pinstripes, adding a sentimental aspect to the acquisition.

As the offseason progresses, the Yankees’ front office remains active in pursuing opportunities to enhance the team’s performance. The acquisition of Cody Bellinger signifies a commitment to building a robust and dynamic roster capable of contending in the upcoming season.

With changes to the working partnership between the MLB and the Minor League having been long anticipated, the MLB has now taken a large step towards its goal of taking over the governance of the minor league.

On Wednesday, the MLB announced its plans to relocate the minor league’s offices to the MLB Headquarters situated in Los Angeles. This news was released via Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times.

As a result of this major decision, the minor league will now form part of the MLB organization, with each minor league club becoming a “licensed affiliate” of the MLB.

To assist in this transition, the MLB has hired the assistance of Peter Freund and Trinity Sports Consultants. Freund is himself an owner of several minor league clubs at three levels, in addition to being a partner with the Yankees.

He is expected to lead the charge in achieving the MLB’s goal of restructuring the minor league system as well as “implementing a modern approach to player development”, as the MLB explained.

Prior to this monumental decision, the MLB came under fire because of cutting 40 teams from the minor league system, along with the insufficient salaries that minor league players were earning.

Recently, the Supreme Court granted minor league players class-action status in their lawsuit against the MLB, thereby allowing players since 2009 to join the lawsuit suing the MLB for the violation of minimum wage laws.

On Monday, the Oakland Athletics clinched the American League West division title, ending a six-season dry spell in the process.

Even though the A’s didn’t actually play on Monday, they were mathematically ensured the division crown after the Houston Astros lost to the Mariners 6-1. The second-place Astros dropped to the .500 mark and they ended 6.5 games behind Oakland. This resulted in the Athletics being the first team to clinch first place in a division in the Majors.

Heading into the season, the Astros were a favorite after they won the division in each of the past three seasons. But, the Athletics surprised many by displacing the 2017 World Series champions from the top of the division.

The Athletics are led by one of baseball’s best pitching staffs and they’ve posted a 3.64 ERA on the season, making them baseball’s best bullpen by ERA.

The upcoming playoffs are set to begin next week and the A’s will be either the league’s 2nd or 3rd seed.

The Houston Astros win against the Seattle Mariners is bittersweet as the season opener was pitcher Justin Verlander’s last appearance in 2020. Verlander announced over the weekend that he’s going to undergo Tommy John surgery for the damage in his elbow.

Recovery for Tommy John surgery varies between players, but they usually take 12 to 15 months to recover and return to the field after the procedure. This means that Verlander will miss the remainder of the 2020 season and that he may also miss the entire 2021 season.

Verlander was attempting a comeback last week, as the 37-year-old pitcher hadn’t seen the mound since July due to a forearm strain. During his comeback, he felt “stiffness” in his elbow and a doctor advised him to have the surgery.

“I truly believe everything happens for a reason,” Verlander said in a video posted on Instagram. “And although 2020 has sucked, hopefully when this rehab process is all said and done, this will allow me to charge through the end of my career and be healthy as long as I want and pitch as long as I want and accomplish some of the goals that I want in my career.”

The Astros’ pitcher still has two years left on his overall deal with the Astros and he’ll be a free agent in 2022. This means that this could have potentially been Verlander’s last game with the team.

Verlander joined the Astros in 2017 and he’s played some of the best baseball of his career. His record since arriving in Houston is 43-15 record with 2.45 ERA and 640 strikeouts. He’s also had two All-Star appearances and in 2019, he won the Cy Young award.
