I know I haven’t been trying to take Milky Way photos for long, but this was my weirdest experience to date. When we got to Lake Tekapo, it was cloudy and pouring rain. Pretty disappointed, I decided to check the hourly weather charts and saw that there would be a clearing between 2 am and 5 am so we went to bed and set the alarms. When we got out of the car to start setting up the tripod around 2:15 am it was clear. But within 5 minutes, we couldn’t see a single star. The weather patterns were crazy… for the next couple hours, it would rain and then clear minutes later. The weirdest thing about it though? It was raining when I took this picture! Crystal clear, no clouds in sight, but somehow I needed my rain cover on the camera. Hawaii’s highest point is one of the most popular stargazing locations in the world. It’s really a breath-taking spot, especially if you consider the fact that Mauna Kea is a volcano. Double the adventure.
