]]>There’s just one thing you need before you can do anything: a SCOBY. A SCOBY stands for symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast, which is the starter for any kombucha. If you don’t know how to get a SCOBY, this is the guide for you.
Chances are there’s someone in your community, whether a friend of a friend or a neighbor across the street, that’s making kombucha. Once you start making kombucha, your batches will start to naturally produce more which you can then give away as well! But to start it off, you need a SCOBY.
If you can’t find a SCOBY, you can make it yourself at home! Just take 1 bottle of organic, unflavored kombucha, and mix it with a homemade sweet tea made from 7 cups of water, 4 bags of organic black tea, and 1/2 cup of sugar. Mix the cooled sweet tea with the bottle of kombucha in a large jar, cover it with a cheesecloth or a coffee filter, and put it in a dark place for 1-4 weeks until your SCOBY forms!

]]>A lot of people claim the probiotics present in kombucha are very transformative in terms of gut health. While a lot of people do experience this benefit, it’s not scientifically proven. However, research does tell us whether it’s beneficial or not, it shouldn’t be consumed in high quantities.
First of all, your body doesn’t need so many probiotics at once. In fact, if you eat or drink something with a lot of probiotics too quickly, you actually might experience bloating or discomfort, the opposite of the intended goal. Secondly, kombucha needs a lot of sugar to ferment, so when you consume that much sugar, your body doesn’t respond well to it. The general consensus is to drink 4 oz maximum 3 times a day, so make sure the next time you pick it up at the market to ration it out appropriately.
