]]>Johnson had high hopes for the movie’s performance at the box office, revealing to Imax “With ‘Red One,’ our intention was to make a movie that you can enjoy on the biggest screen possible.” The team used Imax technology to ensure the movie could play in a premium large format, according to Variety.
However, the $250 million production struggled to gain traction at the box office, earning only $164 million worldwide—a disappointing figure for a project of its scale. Initially planned as a streaming exclusive, Red One was released in theaters ahead of its streaming debut, perhaps in hopes of boosting visibility and recouping costs. Unfortunately, the strategy fell short, as the theatrical performance underwhelmed audiences and critics alike. The film currently holds a 31% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has performed poorly at the global box office, with some experts forecasting a potential loss of around $100 million.
With a notable supporting cast including J.K. Simmons, Lucy Liu, Bonnie Hunt, and Kristofer Hivju, Red One follows a unique premise where Santa Claus (Simmons), codenamed “Red One,” is kidnapped, leading the North Pole’s Head of Security, played by Johnson, to team up with the infamous bounty hunter, portrayed by Evans. The pair embarks on a globe-trotting adventure to rescue Santa and save Christmas.
Critics pointed to a blend of tonal inconsistencies and formulaic storytelling as key reasons for its lackluster reception, though some praised the comedic chemistry between Johnson and Evans. The film’s ambitious attempt to combine heartfelt holiday moments with blockbuster action may have been too polarizing for audiences.
Now streaming on Prime Video, Red One has the opportunity to find its footing with a wider audience. While its theatrical run did not deliver as expected, streaming platforms offer a chance for seasonal films to resonate with viewers seeking holiday entertainment. Whether it will achieve cult status as a Christmas favorite remains to be seen.

Rodarte co-founders Kate and Laura Mulleavy had a strong artistic vision for their latest collection. They worked alongside some of their biggest muses to bring it to life through a series of dreamlike portraits that perfectly capture the whimsical spirit of their designs.
“As we’ve become more confident and comfortable in our design voice and really seeing what our personality is within the design world, it’s been really nice to think artistically about creating a world behind each collection,” said Laura while discussing their new range with Vogue.
