“People using Maps in the US will see ‘Gulf of America,’ and people in Mexico will see ‘Gulf of Mexico.’ Everyone else will see both names,” hey said in a statement Monday.
According to Google, the change was expected. A spokesman said, it had “a longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources,” as Business Insider reported.
The renaming has sparked a range of reactions. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded firmly, telling the Associated Press, “he will call it the ‘Gulf of America’ on its continental shelf. For us it is still the Gulf of Mexico and for the entire world it is still the Gulf of Mexico.”
The executive order also reinstated the name “Mount McKinley” for Alaska’s highest peak, previously known as Denali. Google Maps has updated this change as well.
The renaming of international bodies of water presents complexities, as other countries are not legally required to follow suit. The move has caused tensions between the U.S. and Mexico, with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum urging Google to reconsider and emphasizing that such changes legally only apply up to 12 nautical miles from the U.S. coast.
Traditionally, the Board on Geographic Names and the U.S. Geological Survey would promptly update the GNIS, while the Department of State handled changes to the Geographic Names Server for locations outside the U.S. However, each agency and office is responsible for updating their own websites accordingly.
As of now, the international community continues to recognize the body of water as the Gulf of Mexico, highlighting the challenges and debates surrounding geopolitical naming conventions.
