With Thanksgiving around the corner, you might find yourself thinking more about gratitude. And, sure, it can be nice to share what you’re grateful for while sitting around the holiday table once a year. But there are actually significant benefits to making gratitude a daily habit.  

Stress Reduction and Mental Well-Being

Gratitude has been proven to be a great stress reducer. When you focus on what you are thankful for, it shifts your attention away from stressors and helps you develop a more positive mindset. This mental shift can lead to a reduction in cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress. A less stressed mind is not only beneficial for mental health but also contributes to a healthier body.

Improved Sleep Quality

In several studies, gratitude practices have been linked to improved sleep quality. By reflecting and expressing gratitude, you may experience a sense of calm and relaxation that positively influences your sleep patterns. Reduced stress, combined with a more positive mindset, contributes to better sleep. 

Boosted Immune System Function

This one may surprise you, but gratitude may also play a role in supporting your immune system. The connection between positive emotions and immune function is well-established, and gratitude is a powerful positive emotion. So that’s one more reason to be grateful!

It’s November, which means it’s the season to be grateful (and eat a lot)! In fact, regularly taking the time to think about and even write out what you’re grateful for in a gratitude journal is a great practice that has been scientifically proven to make people happier.

The only thing is that it can be a bit of a challenge to find things to be grateful for every single day, especially if you’re going through a hard time. But the truth is that no matter how bleak your circumstances may look, there’s always something to be grateful for. Here are just three items you may want to write about in your next gratitude journal entry.

Air to Breathe

It’s basic, but the oxygen you’re breathing in every day is what lets you be alive! Take a deep breath. Doesn’t that feel great?

Your Loved Ones

As the Beatles said, we get by with a little help from our friends (and family). How lucky are we to have them by our side to lean on?

Water to Drink

Do you have access to clean water to drink? That means you’re in a more fortunate position than 11% of the world’s population. That’s definitely not something to take for granted.

Holidays are coming and it’s time to think about the year that’s passing and everything we have to be grateful for. But life is often less than great and it can be difficult to focus on the good things, so you need to intentionally decide to be grateful for all the good things that are happening. Gratitude Journal

This is the most obvious and easiest way, but it needs to be mentioned. Even Oprah recommends it! A gratitude journal is any notebook in which you regularly write down things you’re grateful for and it can be very useful during the rough days.

Be a Nice Person

We all think that we’re nice, but how often do you let an elderly person in front of you in the supermarket line or hold the door for someone whose hands are full? These little gestures will make people’s day and you’ll feel a lot better, too.

Keep Meaningful Items Where You Can See Them

Photos of the youngest members of your family or your pets, meaningful drawings and notes, handwritten letters and similar memorabilia deserve a place where you can see them at all times because they will always remind you how blessed you are.
