]]>“I really wanted to show I’m a good player,” Fucsovics explained during his post-match interview. “I had to hit a lot of slices to break his rhythm and stay in the rallies.”
This game proved to be particularly frustrating for Medvedev, who received a code violation after he smashed his racquet into the ground after losing the second set to Fucsovics.
While the 24-year-old Medvedev momentarily gained some of his momentum back after the incident, winning the third set 6-2, the underdog Fucsovics bounced back in the fourth set to seize the triumph. This defeat means that Medvedev has now lost all four of his matches at the French Open.
Medvedev’s defeat is not the only upset in the men’s singles draw so far in this tournament. Former world number four player Kei Nishikori lost his second-round clash in five sets to Stefano Travaglia, while 21st seed John Isner lost his second round fixture to fellow American Sebastian Korda.
Eighth seed Gael Monfils was yet another early casualty. The French player fell in four sets to Alexander Bublik in his first-round clash.

]]>Williams had the following to say in her follow-up press conference: “I think I need four to six weeks of sitting and doing nothing. I have been struggling to walk so that’s a telltale sign that I should try to recover. Achilles is an injury you don’t want to play with – I think it was one of the worst, don’t want to get to that point, I want it to get better.”
Williams initially picked up this injury during her US Open semi-final clash with Victoria Azarenka earlier this month. While initially a minor infraction, the injury gradually worsened until Williams could not continue to participate on the court.
Prior to her withdrawal, Williams was aiming to secure her 24th Grand Slam singles title, thereby equaling the all-time record held by Margaret Court. The unseeded Pironkova, on the other hand, will progress to the third round of the French Open for only the third time in her career.
