If you suffer from chronic bloating or abdominal pain, you might also have heard about the low FODMAP diet. But what is it, and should you try it?

The FODMAP diet was developed in Australia to deal with the symptoms of IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). The strategy it uses is to remove certain carbohydrates from your diet for a period of time.

The low FODMAP diet has three phases: elimination, reintroduction, and personalization, all under the guidance of a doctor or a dietician.

FODMAP stands for fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols, all carbs that some people find difficult to digest. This can result in discomfort and bloating.

Foods that are high in FODMAP carbs include most legumes, fructose, lactose, wheat, rye, onions, and garlic. What you can eat are oats, quinoa, fish, poultry, meat, eggs, and nuts, as well as some dairy and fruits.
