The 2024 Army-Navy game was unlike any other, as the Midshipmen triumphed 31-13 over the Black Knights in a game full of high stakes and thrilling moments. This victory not only gave Navy their first win in the rivalry since 2019, but also earned them the coveted Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy, which they last won in 2019. The historic win came in front of a crowd of over 60,000 at Northwest Field, located just outside Washington, DC. Notably, the game was attended by President-elect Donald Trump.

Highly Anticipated Game

With both teams entering the game with impressive records — Navy at 9-3 and Army at 11-2 — the anticipation for the matchup was at an all-time high. However, it was Navy that would ultimately leave with the victory, thanks in large part to an extraordinary performance by quarterback Blake Horvath.

Horvath was the standout player, accounting for 311 yards and four touchdowns. He threw for 107 yards, including two touchdown passes, and also ran for 204 yards and two touchdowns. His dynamic play helped Navy quickly take control, jumping to a 14-0 lead in the second quarter after Horvath connected with Brandon Chatman for an 18-yard touchdown pass. Despite a strong showing from Army quarterback Bryson Daily — who finished sixth in the Heisman Trophy voting this year — the Black Knights struggled to overcome key turnovers and missed opportunities.

Army, coming off a historic win over Tulane in the American Athletic Conference championship, was unable to recover after falling behind early. Daily, who had been excellent throughout the season, threw three interceptions, one of which was picked off by Navy’s Dashaun Peele and set up a short field for the Midshipmen. Despite a touchdown pass to Hayden Reed in response, Army could never fully regain momentum.

One of the defining moments of the game came in the third quarter, when Horvath connected with Eli Heidenreich for a 52-yard touchdown, putting Navy ahead 21-10. The play tied a school record for most touchdown receptions in a season for Heidenreich and showcased Horvath’s impressive arm and ability to execute under pressure.

In the fourth quarter, Navy was able to seal the win after a successful fake punt run by Landon Robinson, a nose guard, who gained 29 yards before fumbling. However, the Midshipmen recovered and Horvath scored on a 1-yard run to make it 28-13, effectively ending the game.

Navy’s First Trophy Since 2019

With this win, Navy earned its first Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy since 2019, sweeping both Air Force and Army this season. The victory was especially sweet for Navy head coach Brian Newberry, who is in his second year leading the program. “It’s hard nowadays, with the changes in college football, to really build a culture that’s built on love and trust. Those things take time. We still have those here at the academies. That’s why I think I got one of the best jobs in the country,” Newberry told ESPN.

For Army, the loss was particularly painful, with coach Jeff Monken admitting that despite an otherwise successful season, the rivalry defeat cast a shadow over the year. “It’s been a good season. When you lose this game there’s nothing great, tremendous, outstanding or stupendous about it. It frankly makes the season a bit of a disappointment. That’s just the truth of this game,” he told ESPN.

This victory also ensured that Navy would continue their streak in Maryland, as next year’s game will be held in Baltimore. With a promising future ahead, Navy’s win marks a defining moment in the program’s history.
