In a commanding performance on December 29, 2024, the Philadelphia Eagles secured the NFC East title with a 41-7 victory over the Dallas Cowboys at Lincoln Financial Field.

The Eagles’ offense was spearheaded by running back Saquon Barkley, who amassed 167 rushing yards, surpassing the 2,000-yard mark for the season. This achievement places Barkley among an elite group, becoming only the ninth player in NFL history to reach this milestone.

Issues With Injuries

Philadelphia’s quarterback situation required adaptability, with backup Kenny Pickett starting in place of the injured Jalen Hurts, who was sidelined due to a concussion. Pickett contributed both a passing and a rushing touchdown before exiting the game with a rib injury. Despite the setback, Pickett expressed optimism about his condition and prospects for play next week, stating “I’m good. I’ll be all right. Came in with a little bit of an injury and we’ll do some more tests and everything, see how it looks. But I’ll be OK,” as reported by the Chronicle. Third-string quarterback Tanner McKee then took the helm, delivering two touchdown passes to further extend the Eagles’ lead.

The Eagles’ defense was equally formidable, forcing four turnovers from the Cowboys. Dallas quarterback Cooper Rush struggled under pressure, throwing two interceptions that Philadelphia capitalized on, building a 24-7 advantage by halftime. The Cowboys’ offense was unable to recover, managing only a single touchdown throughout the game.

Sideline Altercation

Tensions flared late in the fourth quarter when a scuffle between Eagles safety Sydney Brown and Cowboys cornerback Troy Pride Jr. escalated into a broader altercation near the sideline and into the stadium tunnel. The incident resulted in the ejections of Brown, Pride Jr., and Cowboys wide receiver Jalen Brooks. The NFL is expected to review the incident for potential additional disciplinary actions.

This victory improved the Eagles’ record to 13-3, clinching the NFC East division and securing the No. 2 seed in the upcoming playoffs. The win also alleviated some pressure on head coach Nick Sirianni, who faced criticism earlier in the game for a conservative fourth-down decision that drew boos from the home crowd. Sirianni’s strategic adjustments and the team’s dominant performance ultimately silenced the detractors.

On the other side, the Cowboys fell to 7-9, officially eliminating them from playoff contention. Despite the loss, there was a silver lining for Dallas, as running back Rico Dowdle closed in on a 1,000-yard rushing season, needing just 97 yards to reach the milestone. Additionally, kicker Brandon Aubrey set a franchise record for the most 50-plus-yard field goals in a single season.

According to NFL.com, Eagles coach Nick Sirianni expressed his excitement after clinching the division title. “It’s exciting,” Sirianni said postgame. “We always want to do special things. I think winning the division is a special thing. And then our goals are much bigger from here. I think we’ve got special guys. It was fun celebrating in there when you’re able to do this, and exciting. We’ll enjoy this and then we’ll get right back to work.”

Looking ahead, the Eagles are set to host the No. 7 seed in the wild-card round of the playoffs. Their potential opponents include the Washington Commanders, who are vying for playoff positioning in the final week of the regular season. The Eagles’ final regular-season game against the New York Giants presents decisions regarding player rest and strategic planning, especially concerning the health of key players like Jalen Hurts and the pursuit of individual records by stars such as Saquon Barkley.

This decisive game added another chapter to the longstanding rivalry between the Eagles and Cowboys. Historically, the Cowboys have led the series, but recent Eagles performances have showcased a momentum shift. The rivalry, known for its intensity and memorable moments, continues to be a highlight of the NFL season, captivating fans and contributing to the storied histories of both franchises.

As the Eagles prepare for the postseason, their focus will be on maintaining the momentum from this victory, ensuring the health of their roster, and strategizing for the challenges that lie ahead in their pursuit of a Super Bowl appearance.

The Philadelphia Eagles decided to fly in another direction for the 2021 NFL season. The franchise parted ways with head coach Doug Pederson, announcing the decision on Monday.

The Eagles finished 2020 with a disappointing 4-11-1 record, but  Pederson, who guided the organization to its first Super Bowl in 2017, was initially expected to keep his job. Still, things changed after he had several meetings with owner Jeffrey Lurie in recent weeks.

According to multiple reports, Lurie was unconvinced with Pederson’s vision for the future and plans to handle multiple problems that plagued the team in 2020. This included the offense struggles, coaching staff, salary-cap issues, and the status of quarterback Carson Wentz.

“My first allegiance is, what will be best for the Philadelphia Eagles and our fans for the next three, four, five years,” Lurie explained reporters during a virtual conference. “It’s not based on does someone deserve to hold their job or deserve to get fired; that’s a different bar.”

Doug Pederson departs Philly after coaching the team for five seasons. He compiled a 42-37-1 record in the regular season while making the playoffs three times. Besides the Super Bowl win, the Eagles won their division twice under Pederson while also making the NFC Divisional game in 2018.

Pederson isn’t expected to be without a job for too long, as he immediately becomes a favorite for several openings. This includes the Houston Texans’ head coaching vacancy as well as the job with New York Jets.

Eagles, on the other hand, are expected to target several prominent candidates, including Oklahoma’s Lincoln Riley.

The change at the quarterback position got Philadelphia Eagles back to their winning ways as rookie signal-caller Jalen Hurts led them to an upset 24-21 win over NFC leaders New Orleans Saints.

The Eagles decided to bench starter Carson Wentz in favor of rookie Jalen Hurts for the Saints game, and the gamble paid off in a big way. Hurts gave Philly’s offense a much-needed boost, throwing for 167 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for additional 106 yards.

Hurts had help in the form of second-year running back Miles Sanders, who ran for 115 yards and two TDs including a spectacular 82-yard touchdown run in the first half. The pair became the first Eagles’ QB/RB duo to hit the 100+ yards marks in a single game since Donovan McNabb and Duce Staley did it in 2002.

Hurts and Sander domination on the ground also put an end to the Saints’ impressive streak against running. New Orleans’ defense didn’t allow a player to rush for 100 yards or more for the past 56 games.

“He played awesome, man,” Sanders praised Hurts after the game. “He’s so confident. He’s a natural leader. We just needed that, and he gave us that spark starting from last week.”

Philly held a 17-0 lead at halftime but allowed 14 unanswered points in the third quarter. It seemed that the Saints will manage to get back in the game at the start of the final period, but the Eagles’ defensive end Josh Sweat made a big play by strip-sacking Taysom Hill and set up his offense for a score.

Saints responded with a touchdown of their own but didn’t have enough time to complete the comeback.

The win kept Eagles in the chase for NFC East title and extended their playoff hopes. Saints, on the other hand, are now 10-3 and no longer hold the top position in the conference.
