The stage is bare except for a few pillars and some military-style props. On one hand, it helps focus attention on the characters, stripping away the historical context of Venice and Cyprus. On the other, it leaves you wondering why Othello—a play deeply tied to themes of race, jealousy, and betrayal—needs to be dressed up in such a cold, modern aesthetic.
