After working from home for about a year, many employees are starting to return to the office. While it’s exciting for things to go back to “normal”, you’re pets have gotten used to you working from home and having you around all the time. Before you return to the office, there are things you can do to make your furry friends more comfortable for you when you leave. Here’s how to prepare your pet for when you go back to work.

Leave the House Without Your Pet

Start by going on walks or running errands without your pet. Mix things up and vary your pattern so your pet doesn’t pick up on departure cues like the sound of keys or putting shoes on, and get anxiety from you leaving. Try not to get them all hyped up when you leave or come back.

Make a Safe Space for Them

Have a crate available for your dog so when they get anxious, they have a space they can go to. For cats, they like quiet, dark spaces, that are remote from the busy areas of the home. Cats like areas that they can have all for themselves.

Give Them Treats and Toys

Keep your pets occupied when you’re away with feeding puzzles, special treats, and toys.

Talk to the Vet

If your pet is showing anxiety by barking, engaging in destructive behavior, urinating, or over-grooming, don’t punish them. Instead speak to your vet for recommendations.
