Art therapy is a creative and therapeutic outlet for releasing stress and exploring our emotions. And you don’t need to be an artist to benefit from these activities. Anyone can try it! All you need is a willingness to express yourself. To help you get started, here are three activities to consider.

Mindful Coloring

Mindful coloring is a simple yet effective art therapy activity that can help reduce stress and anxiety. And you don’t need to be an expert—anyone can enjoy the calming benefits of coloring. Simply, choose a coloring book or print out coloring pages that appeal to you. Find a comfortable space, take deep breaths, and focus on the act of coloring.

Collage Therapy

For this activity, gather magazines, newspapers, or any images that resonate with you. Start by cutting out images, words, or phrases that speak to you. Arrange and glue these elements onto your paper or canvas. When you’re done, as yourself: What themes or feelings emerge? How do the images relate to your stressors or sources of relaxation?

Expressive Painting

Painting is a great way to release pent-up emotions and express yourself without words. As you paint, don’t worry about creating a masterpiece. Simply focus on the process and the emotions you’re expressing.
