The Time Keeper By Mitch Albom

The Time Keeper packs a captivating plot in only around 300 pages. The story follows the first man ever to count time and his journey to the modern era. His exploration of our world examines our society’s overall relationship with time. While the plot is somewhat cerebral, it stays universal and enjoyable for anyone. Mitch Albom has written other similarly short novels like this, such as The Five People You Meet In Heaven and Tuesdays With Morrie.

The Pearl by John Steinbeck

The Pearl is a classic novel, but still stands the test of time. It’s one of the shorter books on this list, yet remains profound and quite bigger than its pages. This tale of tradition, home, and simplicity explores issues of wealth and poverty, as well as the importance of family.

Circe By Madeline Miller

For fans of Greek mythology, Circe explores the lives of the minor gods and titans of Olympus. Madeline Miller’s narrative style makes her books difficult to put down, making them easy to finish in even one sitting. Additionally, Circe explores themes of feminism while set in ancient Greece, making the protagonist’s character that much more appealing.

Bikeman by Thomas Flynn

Bikeman is a narrative epic poem describing what author Thomas Flynn witnessed while riding his bike through New York City on September 11, 2001. It is written as poetry instead of in traditional prose, making it both short yet complex. This book is not only suited for poetry lovers, but also those looking for contemporary memoirs and nonfiction.

Author Ashley C. Ford, co-host of HBO’s Lovecraft Country Radio podcast, tells the story of her childhood and her father’s imprisonment in this memoir about the complexities of coming of age and family relationships.

The Turnout, Megan Abbott (July 6)

For anybody who grew up loving movies like Center Stage and Step Up, this book about sisters who co-run their late mother’s dance studio is sure to be of interest.
