NBA Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas opened up about his health battle, revealing that he has been diagnosed with Bell’s palsy, a condition that causes temporary facial paralysis. The 62-year-old basketball legend shared the news during a recent appearance on Mark Jackson’s Come and Talk 2 Me podcast on YouTube, expressing his gratitude for the support he’s received from fans, family, and friends.
“And I haven’t really told anybody, right? So, I got Bell’s palsy, and, again, that’s why you see me like this. So, I appreciate the prayers and the love, but that’s what’s happening with my mouth right now.” Thomas explained, acknowledging the noticeable changes to his facial appearance. Bell’s palsy typically affects one side of the face, leading to weakness or paralysis, and can develop suddenly.
Thomas, who was known for his leadership and toughness on the court, has continued to show up for his commitments despite the challenges posed by the condition. He also discussed his diagnosis on NBA TV, taking a moment to express his gratitude to those who have supported him “during this past month.” “I’m dealing with it, I’m showing up, I ain’t taking off — but I just wanted everybody to know that I appreciate your prayers and thank you for everything,” he said.
Thomas also posted a picture of himself on the NBA TV set with the caption: “See you soon, @nbatv. I appreciate your prayers as I continue to recover from Bell’s Palsy.”
The announcement has drawn widespread support from his fans, colleagues, and fellow athletes. Thomas, who played for the Detroit Pistons in the 1980s and 1990s, is widely regarded as one of the greatest point guards in NBA history. His leadership led the Pistons to two NBA championships in 1989 and 1990, earning him a spot in the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000.
Bell’s palsy, which is often associated with stress or viral infections, has no known cause, but most people recover fully within months. The condition can cause symptoms such as drooping of one side of the face, difficulty closing the eye, and facial numbness. Although Thomas’s diagnosis came as a surprise to many, his positive outlook and continued commitment to his work serve as a testament to his resilience.
In addition to his basketball achievements, Thomas has remained an influential figure in sports media and business. He has often been praised for his philanthropy and for mentoring young athletes, showing the same leadership off the court that he displayed during his playing days.
With his characteristic determination, Thomas remains focused on his recovery, with a strong sense of gratitude for the outpouring of love and support he has received.
