Keeping our houses clean is essential, both for how they look and for health reasons. Too much dust, or mold, can impact breathing and cause allergic reactions. However, when you’re cleaning you may not want to use traditional products, many of which are loaded with strong chemicals, unnecessary fragrances, and ingredients that can be harsh to the skin. Try these natural alternatives instead, all of which can be made at home easily and cheaply.

Sugar and Oat Scrub

If you need to scrub grime off a durable surface (perhaps from the oven or shower, for example), try this natural exfoliator before you turn to harsher, shop-bought products. Stir two tablespoons of sugar with one tablespoon of oatmeal and then add one tablespoon of vegetable oil, to bind it. Using a strong cloth dipped in this mix, scrub at grime using circular motions and you should see any dirt shifting quickly. To get rid of the residue, try a spritz of lemon juice or vinegar, this should clear any oil and sugar from the spot. A little baking powder added to the mix can increase its cleansing powers, but do be careful as this can irritate the skin.

Natural Glass Cleaner

Combine 2 cups of water, 1 cup of white or cider vinegar, and 1/8 cup of rubbing alcohol in an empty, clean spray bottle. Spritz onto glass and wipe clean. If you want, you can add a few drops of essential oil to the mix to fragrance it.

Marble Cleaner

If you’re lucky enough to have real marble worktops, try this simple cleaner before buying a shop-bought product. Simply mix one teaspoon of washing up liquid with 2 cups of warm water, and then sponge clean marble surfaces. You may want to go back over with a cloth soaked in pure water, to rinse off any residue.

Going through a divorce is never easy. But when you have children, divorces can be even messier, especially as you try to figure out how to co-parent with someone you’re no longer in a relationship with.

When Samson Fowler separated from his wife Beth, it had a huge effect on their young son Mason. He soon realized it was more than just having two homes that was bothering his son. No matter how hard he tried, Mason wouldn’t share why he didn’t want to stay at his mother’s house—until it was almost too late.

Over the past few years, we have seen a houseplant boom, as every design catalog, influencer, and cutting-edge brand has made use of houseplants to boost their aesthetic. There are health reasons for keeping living plants in the home, and many are surprisingly easy to look after. The three plants listed here are particularly pleasing, as they look good, help to purify the air, and offer value for money.

Peace Lily

Offering glossy green leaves on elegant stems, this plant is well-known for cleansing the air in your living space. They don’t generally require too much care, and if you place them in bright, indirect sunlight, you should be rewarded with pretty, creamy white flowers. Do be aware that peace lilies are mildly toxic to pets and small children, so keep them out of reach of any grabbing hands (or paws). Keep the soil lightly moist to the touch, but not saturated. Feed the plant every week or so and your peace lily should thrive in your home for years to come.

Aloe Vera

A statement plant, aloe vera plants grow in arid, desert environments. You won’t want to overwater this plant, once a week is ample. Keep it in bright sunlight, it needs a minimum of six hours of bright sunlight each day to really thrive. It is possible to use aloe vera juice, a thick, sap-like substance stored in the stems of the plants which has cosmetic uses for skin. Break a stem off from the base of the plant and let it drain into a glass for 15-20 minutes, to allow the yellow-tinted resin to soak out. Peel off the skin and scoop out the clear aloe vera gel. You can use it as it is or blend it for a smoother consistency. Kept in the fridge, it will last up to one week.

Spider Plant

With its distinctive long, pale green leaves, spider plants are one of the most common house plants. This means they can be bought very cheaply, and they require minimal care. Place them in direct sunlight, partial light, or even in a darker spot, and they will tend to thrive. Water once a week, and feed fortnightly if you wish. Be warned, spider plants produce lots of “spiderettes”, small spider plants attached to the mother plant. You can cut these off, place them in water until the roots are established, and then replant them, to really get the most out of your spider plant.

If you live in a home with many rooms, there is a good chance that clutter will build up in various places over time. While cleaning up the mess can feel overwhelming, here are some easy places to start that will take five minutes or less to declutter.

The Refrigerator

Keeping your fridge organized is essential so that you don’t get sick from eating food that’s gone bad. Check your fridge systematically from bottom to top, starting with the vegetable drawers and working your way up. Finally, check the door to see that your milk, sauces, and other beverages are still fresh.

Your Desk Drawer

While it may seem easy to simply throw stationery into your desk drawer and close it, you’ll regret doing so the next time you’re searching for a specific pen. Remove any garbage such as bubble gum wrappers and old receipts you no longer need and organize your stationery neatly.

The Pantry

Sometimes, our pantries become overstocked because of items we no longer need. Start by going through spices and then move on to food items, throwing out anything stale or that you no longer need.

The houseplant trend seems never ending, as more and more people are choosing these beautiful green decorations for their home space. But it can be easy to forget that these amazing additions are alive, and as such need some care and attention. For the people out there who fear the responsibility of plant ownership, here are three stunning choices that can handle a bit of neglect.

Snake Plant

These funky looking plants are renowned as some of the hardest to kill, and for good reason. They can handle low light, don’t need watering constantly, and are pretty self-sufficient. They also can grow to impressive heights, and add some stylish greenery to any room.

Pothos / Devil’s Ivy

These stunning plants can be placed in hanging pots, or put with a climber. They grow quickly and liven up any room with their bright leaves. They also don’t need much light, and spring back quickly if they do get a bit dehydrated.

Dracaena / Dragon Tree

These lovely tall plants are also fairly easy to please. They do want some light and regular water, but aren’t too fussy about this. It’s a good idea to trim any yellow or brown leaves to keep it healthy.

If you live in a home with many rooms, there is a good chance that clutter will build up in various places over time. While cleaning up the mess can feel overwhelming, here are some easy places to start that will take five minutes or less to declutter.

Check your fridge systematically from bottom to top, starting with the vegetable drawers and working your way up. The snake plant is a virtually indestructible houseplant that doesn’t need much light. Its tall, sword-shaped leaves add a modern and sculptural element to your space. You can get a small one to keep by your bed. Or let it grow in a bigger pot and watch it get tall and strong.

Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)

Pothos is a trailing vine with heart-shaped leaves that come in various shades of green. This plant grows pretty fast and you can drape it in various directions, like over a bookshelf or a window, for a beautiful added green element.
